I'm Álvaro Martín, a self-taught artist based in Madrid. Drawing has been part of my life since childhood, although for many years art took a back seat.
I studied Mathematics and Statistics and have worked for several years in data science and artificial intelligence. Painting, meanwhile, has gradually taken on a more central place in my life.
I work mainly in oil and am drawn to figurative painting for its ability to depict people, objects and recognisable scenes with precision, while also conveying something that is not explained at first glance.
I am currently developing a collection of medium- to large-format paintings built around cinematic scenes. They bring together female figures, private spaces, everyday objects and animals that can take on symbolic meaning. I am drawn to images that seem to pause a story in a particular moment, leaving room to imagine what happened before or what might happen next.
In these scenes, I explore some of the contradictions of contemporary life: the pressure to be productive, the desires we put aside and the structures that shape our freedom. Through them, I invite reflection and propose another way of looking at what we often take for granted.
I also believe a painting does not need a message to justify its existence. The visual force of an image and the pleasure of looking at it have value in their own right. I am interested in bringing the visual and the conceptual together: first, the work should stand on its own as an image; for those who want to spend time with it, it can also suggest something more.
Both my technique and my visual language are still evolving. Each painting is an opportunity to refine my approach and find new ways to build these scenes.
